St Peter’s Church has been at the heart of the town of Chertsey for around 800 years. Today it is a vibrant Christian community which is beginning to outgrow the buildings as they are.
The medieval church was built around 1300 and the nave pulled down and enlarged in 1806-8, the hall was built in the 1980’s.
We are seeking to sensitively develop and enhance the current church and hall buildings to give us additional space and flexibility. The premises are in use every day of the week for both the church and community, and for people of all ages.
The original church had no seats – the 1808 replacement had boxed-in seats rented by the wealthy, and since Victorian times, we have had pews. These are uncomfortable and inflexible and we plan to replace them with purpose-made movable (and comfortable) seating which will allow the space to be better used for church and community.
The bell tower floor was removed in 1907 and has made the bells difficult to ring and difficult to hear for the ringers. We plan to re-install a glazed-in ringing room floor which will then allow the west tower entrance and welcome area to be used unhindered.
The North Gallery is currently unusable space and will be converted into a 24×7 prayer room.
The Memorial Chapel will be enclosed with glass and become a self-contained room for meetings and for private prayer. The hall will be extended and refurbished and new rooms and toilet facilities created.
The project is planned in three phases:
- Bell tower, Memorial chapel and 24×7 Prayer Room
- New welcome area, floor and seating in the main church
- Extension and refurbishment of the hall, new toilets and improved disabled access
We work with young people, local schools and groups and also with the elderly and care homes and with many local families including many who are struggling.
However, St Peter’s is 100% self-sufficient and receives no financial support whatsoever from the Church of England! The congregation already funds seven full and part time staff including Clergy, a Families Worker, Youth Worker and Administrator. We also have to light and heat one of the largest historic churches in Surrey. Our basic running costs are about £200,000 and are funded internally.
The cost of the Development Project is estimated at about £1.8 million which we need to raise through gifts, fundraising and grants.
