Worship & Technical Ministry Lead

St Peter’s Church, Chertsey is looking for a Worship & Technical Ministry Lead to develop worship and technical ministry across our Sunday services and key gatherings. 

This part-time role will involve leading worship, supporting worship bands, coordinating the volunteer tech team, and helping identify, encourage and develop musicians, worship leaders and technicians. 

Role details 
  • Job title: Worship & Technical Ministry Lead 
  • Hours: 15 hours per week, including Sunday mornings, preparation, rehearsals, team leadership and planning meetings 
  • Salary: £28,000 to £32,000 per annum pro rata, depending on experience 
  • Duration: Ongoing 
  • Responsible to: The Joint Vicar, Rev Phil Richardson 
We are looking for someone who: 
  • Has experience of leading sung worship in a church context 
  • Is musically confident and able to lead a band and congregation well 
  • Can organise rehearsals and communicate clearly 
  • Can encourage, train and support volunteers 
  • Has a working understanding of live sound and church technical ministry 
  • Is prayerful, reliable, collaborative and well-organised 

There is a Genuine Occupational Requirement for the post-holder to be a committed Christian with a live church connection, in accordance with the Equality Act 2010.

Job Description 

Title of Post: Worship & Technical Ministry Lead 

Responsible to: Vicar, Rev Phil Richardson  

Hours: 15 hours per week

Vision of Worship at St Peter’s: 

Worship is an integral part of our gathered life as a church, helping the congregation to encounter God, to be formed as disciples, and to respond in praise, prayer and thanksgiving. We aim to deepen corporate expressions of Christ-focused and Spirit-filled worship, supported by excellent, servant-hearted music and technical ministry. 

Main Purpose of Post: 

To lead, develop and oversee worship and technical ministry within Sunday services and other key gatherings, enabling the congregation to participate fully, and supporting a growing team of musicians, singers and technicians. To contribute to the leadership and direction of the church through input into the Leadership Team. 

Role Description: 

  • Work closely with the Vicar and Staff Team to explore and develop the vision to deepen corporate expressions of Christ-focused and Spirit-filled worship. 
  • Lead, develop and empower the worship team and musicians. 
  • Create an environment for growth and creativity in musical worship, motivating innovation (including introducing new songs) and helping the congregation to participate rather than to perform. 
  • Lead and oversee worship at Sunday services at least three times per month and, as agreed, at prayer meetings and other events, and festivals, e.g. Christmas and Easter. Including service preparation, set-up and follow-up. 
  • Organise and lead worship bands (musicians and singers), including communicating set lists, allocating parts/roles, and ensuring appropriate musical preparation. 
  • Lead and facilitate rehearsals, helping the team to play and sing confidently and serve the congregation well. 
  • Oversee the volunteer-led tech team (including sound system/audio, projection/lyrics and other technical service ministry), ensuring rotas, preparation and effective communication between worship and tech teams. 
  • Oversee and support the traditional worship at the 9am service, liaising with pianists/organists to ensure the smooth running of the worship rota. 
  • Provide oversight of music and equipment, working with volunteers to identify issues and contribute to plans for improvement within agreed budgets. 
  • Identify and develop potential music team members, worship leaders and technicians, creating opportunities for development, coaching and personal growth. 
  • Contribute to the Leadership Team and work collaboratively with clergy, staff and volunteers, attending agreed planning meetings within contracted hours.

Hours and Pay Rate 

  • Hours: 15 per week, including Sundays, preparation/planning time, team leadership/meetings and rehearsals. 
  • Main requirement is presence on Sunday mornings (typically 10.00am–12 noon) plus an agreed rehearsal and time for planning, communication and oversight of the worship and tech teams. 
  • Pay rate: £28,000 to £32,000 p/a pro rata depending on experience

Person Specification: 

Essential Skills 

  • Experience of leading sung worship in a church context. 
  • Strong musical ability (vocally and/or instrumentally) with the skills to lead a band and congregation confidently. 
  • Ability to plan and communicate set lists and arrangements in good time, working with others to deliver well-prepared worship. 
  • Ability to organise and lead rehearsals, drawing the best out of volunteers with varying levels of confidence and experience. 
  • Proven ability to lead, develop and empower volunteers, including recruitment, rota-building, training and pastoral support. 
  • Good communication and teamwork, including effective liaison between worship and tech teams (lyrics/projection, audio and service logistics). 
  • Working understanding of live sound in a church setting, sufficient to support and oversee a volunteer-led team. 
  • An ability to fulfil the post in line with any relevant safeguarding requirements.
